Bangkok
I’m here in Bangkok for a long weekend as I hopscotch across Asia towards Greece. Since Thailand is one of the few places I’ve been where the US dollar still goes a long way, I’m staying in a semi-luxury hotel just steps away from some incredible Thai food…so I’ve stayed in the past few nights enjoying dinner in my room while watching American news (which I haven’t seen in while) on a large screen plasma TV. Worked out well because there have been heavy downpours both nights I’ve been here.
Today I went to some of Bangkok’s top sites: The Grand Palace where Thai Kings have lived for the past few hundred years, and Wat Pho, Bangkok’s oldest Temple which houses the massive Reclining Buddha which is 150 feet long and 50 feet high. I enjoyed walking around the city most though, in spite of the hot sun and a temperature that had to be close to 100F. Looking at the map when I got back to the hotel, I think I walked 7 or 8 miles from the palace and waterfront market, across to the center of the city and then back to my hotel in the Bangrak neighborhood.
I have another day to explore Bangkok and then on Monday morning I fly to Delhi where I’ll spend 3 days before flying to Greece. By next Friday I’ll be in Athens where I’ll meet my brother Dean and his family…I’m looking forward to that since I’ve been away from home for close to 5 months.
